Silver CoinsOne ounce of silver is about $30 an ounce. There are various types of U.S. Silver coins.Pre 1965 U.S. silver coins contained 90% silver, such as the Roosevelt and Mercury Dimes, Washington Quarters and Franklin Half Dollars. These are probably the easiest silver coins to find and collect. These “survival” silver coins can be stored in rolls or individual coin holders. U.S. Morgan Silver Dollars (photo right), minted from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921, contain 0.77344 troy ounces of pure silver. These historic U.S. Silver Dollars cost about $45 on up, depending on their condition. We recommend investing in Very Good or better condition silver coins. A good looking silver dollar is easier to trade, than one that is all scratched and faded. Modern day U.S. Silver Eagle Dollars, minted from 1986 to date, contain 1 ounce .999 Silver, are also a safer investment. U.S. silver coins can be purchased at most pawn shops, coin shops and on ebay. The advantages to silver coins is it’s lower value, and ease of trade for smaller value items. Silver coins make the ideal bartering tool. If you have a lot of money to invest, silver can be very heavy and take up a lot of storage space. You might want to consider investing in small gold coins.
Small Gold CoinsGold prices have just recently broken $1900 US, and are still rising. Pure gold coins, aka Gold Bullion, can be purchased in U.S. Buffalos or Canadian Maples (photo right), which contain .9999 Pure Gold (24K).Consider a diversity of pure gold coins in various investment sizes, including the 1 ounce gold coins for long term investment, and an assortment of small gold coins for bartering and trading purposes. The small gold coins can be purchased in 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/2 oz. sizes (the size of a dime, quarter and half dollar). These small gold coins are easy to carry, hide and to barter with. I don’t recommend that you get into rare gold coins, unless you really know what you are doing. In case of an emergency, determining their actual rare coin value, might be impossible to do. A one ounce gold bullion coin will always be worth the spot price of gold. U.S. Buffalo Gold Coins and Canadian Maple Gold Coins can be purchased at coin dealers, ebay and from large gold bullion dealers. Expect to pay a small mintage or coinage fee, ranging from $40-$100 over the spot price of gold. Proper Coin Storage
Silver Coins will oxidize over time and can easily scratch. Gold Coins are very soft, with a hardness of only 2.5/10. If dropped on a hard surface, gold coins will dent and can even bend. For coin storage, we recommend purchasing Air-Tite crystal clear acrylic coin holders, made in the USA, (about 40 cents each), to keep your gold and silver coins properly protected and air tight from oxidation and scratches. They can also be rolled and easily stored. |
